At Cheffins we collaborate across our specialist departments including Rural, Planning and Development to bring successful Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) schemes to the market.

What is Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)?

BNG is an integral part of the government’s strategy to halt species decline by 2030. It was introduced by the Environment Act 2021 and obligates developers in England to deliver a ‘net gain’ of at least 10% biodiversity when undertaking residential, commercial or industrial development projects.

The new regulations for implementing BNG came into effect in February 2024 so that developers must now assess the biodiversity value of the natural features on-site and produce a plan to ensure that the minimum 10% BNG requirement is achieved once the development project is completed.

If you are interested in acquiring BNG units please see the available schemes below which offer Off-Site solutions for your development. We are in regular contact with landowners regarding new and emerging sites and if you would like to register to be kept informed of available units please contact katie.hilton@cheffins.co.uk  01223 271959.

Developers

Buying Biodiversity Net Gain units

For developers who find that gaining the biodiversity enhancements they need on-site is impractical, we offer a selection of BNG units off-site that are created by trusted sources for the long-term commitment you need. We work closely with landowners at all stages, from the successful creation of your biodiversity units to the future management and monitoring of sites.

Land Managers

Selling Biodiversity Net Gain units

Landowners exploring the potential to create biodiversity units on their land for sale to the development sector are advised to seek professional input from an early stage.

We can provide advice from the outset, ensuring your site is selected for the long-term benefit of the farm business and is strategically located for the best financial and environmental benefits. As part of our service we:

  • Advise on the site selection for your BNG scheme to achieve strategic outcomes.
  • Engage our ecologists to undertake baseline habitat surveys in accordance with Defra’s Metric 4.0 guidance and calculate the number of biodiversity units that could be created on your site.
  • Create habitat management plans to demonstrate your ability to achieve successful BNG habitat creation and long-term enhancement on your site.
  • Ensure your site is listed with the appropriate Local and National BNG registration schemes.
  • Market your biodiversity units for sale to our wide range of contacts in the development sector, liaise with the relevant planning authorities and negotiate the contractual arrangements and other commercial terms with prospective purchasers.

For more information on BNG or for an informal discussion please contact Katie Hilton or Jonathan Purkiss.
