Martin Millard picks lot 156, a late 19th century Louis Vuitton cabin trunk, estimate £300 - £500.
“I love this Louis Vuitton trunk. It was a genuine attic find from a lovely house in Suffolk and it has traces of numerous labels, having been well-travelled throughout its lifetime. Cleaned up it could make a fantastic coffee table. Louis Vuitton trunks have a timeless and universal appeal and are collected worldwide. When Vuitton started creating these trunks in the mid-1800s, they revolutionised the market. Able to be stacked one upon the other, they became hugely popular in the heyday of late 19th and early 20th century travel.”
Gabrielle Downie has chosen lots 443 – 447 a group of Maggi Hambling oil paintings, with estimates of £3,000 - £5,000 apiece.
“I love everything about the sea, so I am particularly drawn to these pieces as Hambling’s dynamic and intuitive application of paint perfectly mimics the elemental ferocity and tumult of her subject. The works are so descriptive in technique that I feel like I can feel the ocean spray and hear the roaring waves.”
Brett Tryner picks lot 402, A Cockerel by Mary Fedden, estimate £4,000 - £6,000.
“Fedden had a long and successful career, she had her first exhibition in 1947 at Heal’s department store and painted the covers for Woman Magazine. In 1951 she married the artist Julian Trevelyan with whom she met before the war, and they collaborated on large murals together. Fedden herself painted murals for the Television Pavilion at the 1951 Festival of Britain.
The bold palette in the painting is so typical of Fedden’s work demonstrating her use of contrasting colours. After the war was over, Fedden developed her own style of painting which was reminiscent of artists such as Matisse and Braque
What I like about this picture is that it almost has a timeless style about it and would look good in any setting from a country house to a modern interior. This is demonstrated in our photo shoot with the designer, Jermaine Gallacher. The bold palette looks perfect against the plain boarded wall and is complemented by the inclusion of modern vases.”
