Birling Ashes, Kent
Birling Ashes, near West Malling in Kent, is another important country house from which contents will be sold at the Fine Sale. This impressive Grade II listed country home has a magnificent great hall, which was packed from floor to ceiling with antiques. There will be 58 lots going under the hammer at Cheffins from the house, including a French bronze by Eugene Marioton, which has an estimate of £800 - £1,200, along with various typical country house antiques including tables, fenders, clocks, a large three-seater Knole sofa, a Gothic pulpit, carpets, paintings and mirrors.
The Great Hall, Birling Ashes
Often having been kept within the same family for decades, or even centuries, country house sales often provide a wonderfully eclectic mixture of antiques and furnishings, assembled over generations, and presented to the market for the first time. Such contents offer buyers the chance to bid on and buy unusual, often well-loved pieces without necessarily spending vast amounts of money. Country house collections are becoming rarer in the market, but at Cheffins we are hugely experienced in dealing with these types of estates from around the country, and experience has shown that such fresh-to-market collections always generate a premium in interest from bidders intrigued by the décor behind the façade.
