Groovy Garage, a new vintage and streetwear shop, is set to open at 20 Magdalene Street on 3rd June. The unit, which was previously occupied by Poco Kids was let by Cheffins on behalf of Magdalene College.
Groovy Garage is an independent business, owned by two friends, Elis Haddock and Jack Tavener, who saw the potential of opening a store in Cambridge. Elis Haddock comments:
“We already have a store in Kettering which has been a great success in selling second-hand vintage clothes and streetwear. My business partner and I have often visited Cambridge over the years and decided that the city really needed a niche clothing company such as ours. As our clothes and custom artworks have proved massively popular with students, we decided that Cambridge with its university and student population would a sensible next move for the business. Magdalene Street has a really quirky feel and is home to plenty of independent traders so we thought it would be the perfect location for the next Groovy Garage. We are excited about opening the shop and look forward to welcoming as many people as possible through the door.”
20 Magdalene Street is an attractive ground floor unit near the River Cam and extends to 267 sq ft. The Grade II listed property forms part of the historic collection of shops located opposite Magdalene College which has had a history of encouraging fledgling companies to its busy retail parade.
Georgina Bifulco, Assistant Surveyor at Cheffins comments: “Groovy Garage is an excellent addition to Magdalene Street. With a history as home to some of Cambridge’s most diverse and fastest-growing independent companies, Magdalene Street has become a key shopping destination for people looking for something a bit different. The College is anxious to maintain the diverse tenant mix currently on the street and the arrival of Groovy Garage will help encourage footfall to this beautiful area of the city.”
Cheffins has managed Magdalene Street for over 20 years and has delivered a programme of rejuvenation on behalf of Magdalene College including strategic advice on the tenant mix and enhancement of income stream.
Groovy Garage has recently completed a comprehensive fit out of the unit and will be officially open to the public from the 3rd June.
