Cheffins has launched its first ever affordable art sale. Taking place on Thursday 29th July, The Affordable Art Sale – A Summer Show, will see 297 artworks go under the hammer, with estimates ranging from £50 - £800.
Brett Tryner from Cheffins, says:
“The new Affordable Art Sale - A Summer Show, will cater for the growing demand for quality but reasonably priced artwork. With a plethora of younger collectors coming to the market, we have seen prices steadily rise for Modern British Art and this has clearly made way for space in our calendar for a sale dedicated to this new buying force. The auction will include a series of original works and signed prints to provide something for all buyers and budgets, up to the value of around £800. As the Covid crisis put a greater emphasis on our homes and the way we live, we have seen a direct correlation with the increasing number of new bidders for every sale we have offered over the past 12 months as purchasers now look to seek out individual items rather than simply turning to the High Street. This has been a real boon for regional auction houses across the country and we expect that The Affordable Art Sale will help to satisfy the demand in the market for original artwork as the trend for ‘not buying new’ continues to gather pace.”

On offer at the auction are paintings, drawings, etchings and prints, with highlights including three etchings by David Hockney, from his series ‘Illustrations for Six Fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm’ dated 1969, with an estimate of £400 - £600; a series of etchings by Augustus John, with estimates of £300 - £500 and a series of lithographs by Dame Elisabeth Frink with estimates from £150 upwards. There are also linocuts by popular 20th century artist, Edward Bawden and two wood engravings by Eric Gill. These are offered alongside a series of Cornish scenes by post-war and contemporary artist Derek Inwood, as well as traditional portraits, landscapes and still life scenes from various artists.

As part of the sale, Cheffins has collaborated with block printer and fabric and wallpaper designer, Molly Mahon, creating images of how the artworks can be brought to life against a patterned backdrop.
Brett Tryner from Cheffins continues: “We worked closely with Molly Mahon and her team to select the best wallpaper patterns to illustrate how some of these artworks would look within a home environment. The colours and patterns from the wallpaper have helped to really bring these pictures to life and hopefully will help to encourage more collectors to come to the sale.”
