Over 400 lots of automobilia from private collections from across the UK will set the bar for values for the collecting class at the Cheffins Vintage Sale on 22nd and 23rd April.
Comprising of petrol globes, enamel signs, petrol cans, mascots and all manner of collectibles relating to motoring and motoring history, automobilia is fast becoming one of the auction house’s most important sections of the Vintage Sale.
Tom Godsmark, Associate at Cheffins says: “The market for automobilia is growing year-on-year, as collectors continue to seek out the rarest and earliest forecourt items. Buyers are a mix of petrolheads, dealers and private collectors, but the volume of these has increased rapidly in the past couple of years and this has meant that prices have almost doubled, with figures well into the thousands being paid on a regular basis. The automobilia section of the April sale is one of the best quality we have seen to date, consigned from private collections up and down the country, and much of what will be available is completely fresh-to-the-market and looks likely to set the bar in terms of values for the section.”
Highlights include a 1930s Shell Satam cabinet two door petrol pump, which has been fully restored, at over 10ft tall it has an estimate of £8,000 - £10,000. There is also a National Super Mixture glass globe which is a highly desirable, early example which is set to sell for £1,000 - £1,500; a rare Dunlop Fort enamel sign from the 1930s, in remarkable condition, which could sell for in excess of £5,000 and an uncommon Power Diesel Agency enamel sign which has an estimate of £1,600 - £1,800.
Also available will be the remainder of the Pooley Collection, the majority of which was sold at the Cheffins Vintage Sale in October 2021. Consisting of over 150 lots, the remainder of the Pooley Collection includes a highly uncommon Motor R.O.P Spirit fuel can, a rare version of the more common R.O.P Motor Spirit can.
Tom Godsmark continues: “One of the great things about collecting automobilia is that although some items are now hugely expensive, there are others which remain affordable for those looking to start a collection. For example, at the October Vintage Sale last year, the first part of the Pooley Collection which comprised of a vast selection of early oil cans, pourers, petrol cans and so on, saw a number of items smash their pre-sale estimates, but also some which sold for around the £200 and £300 mark and are proving to be an excellent investment.”
The automobilia section has the potential to gross £50,000 in total.
