Description

Hermanus Koekkoek the Elder (1815-1882)

Fisherfolk and boats on a beach, believed to be Scheveningen
signed lower left
oil on canvas
42 x 58cm

The present subject is highly evocative of views of Scheveningen church above the dunes first popularised by numerous Dutch artists of the 17th century. Scheveningen was also depicted by other members of the Koekkoek family, including Jan H. B. Koekkoek.

The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. An old tear in the canvas has been repaired through lining but the edges are starting to lift and old overpaint has darkened giving the area a slightly grubby appearance. The paint layers are stable overall apart from a localised area at the left hand side which is raised a flaking. Overpaint is present, mainly located in the sky and slightly mismatched to the original. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even and glossy.
