Circle of Harry Hall (c. 1813-1882)

Two racehorses Orlando and Running Rein in a landscape
inscribed with the horses' names
oil on canvas
29.5 x 38.5cm

Provenance:
Collection of the late Susan Mason, removed from Mulberry House, Titchwell, Norfolk

The present work depicts the two horses involved in the Derby ‘scandal’ of 1844. Initially won by Running Rein by threequarters of a length from Orlando, it later transpired that Running Rein was in fact a four-year-old called Maccabeus and therefore too old to run in the Epsom Classic. After a court case, the race was awarded to Orlando who was painted by John Frederick Herring the same year.

Framed 40 x 50cm
