Box of military ephemera, including hundreds of letters and hundreds of postcards, all connected with a French sailor-electrician (matelot-électricien), Maurice Gaillard and his family at Bar-le-Duc



More items covering the First World War, the inter-war period, and the Second World War. Gaillard served on the torpilleurs (torpedo boats) Tornade and Téméraire, and on the contre-torpilleur (destroyer) Vauquelin. Many envelopes and 25-30 letters, and a number of postcards have the ships' cachets, and there are several military post cachets (with an additional c.20 on postcards). There are letterheads with various anchor designs, and some relating to naval aviation. Many of the letters, in their original envelopes, were sent in the 1930s while Maurice Gaillard was serving on the Vauquelin. There are First World War documents relating to the French Air Force and to the Special Bureau, North African Artillery Units. Another Gaillard was a prisoner-of-war at Stalag IVB in Germany (there are 2 Red Cross International Committee cards sent to his family from Geneva during the Second World War). There are a number of military correspondence cards from both World Wars
