Alex Kidson, George Romney: A complete catalogue of his paintings, New Haven: Yale University Press, 2015, no. 378 and 378a The present painting is a copy after Romney's portrait of Mrs Rachel Drake (1761-1784) dated to 1783 which is now in a private collection. The sitter was the daughter of Jeremiah Ives of Norwich and married in 1781 William Drake, MP for Amersham. The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which is unlined. The canvas tension is slightly slack, but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a stable condition overall. The varnish layer is thick, glossy and yellowed. There are localised areas of overpaint visible under ultraviolet light. It is unclear if some elements of the composition have been reworked, this requires further investigation.Framed 90 x 77cm
